The High Cost of A Gold Star

When a member of our Armed Forces dies, the family becomes a “Gold Star” Family. This Memorial Day, we hope you take a moment to pause and remember what the cost paid for our freedom is. We found this honest Facebook post about the unimaginable pain one family shouldered in the name of “freedom.”

You never forget the day your life changes forever.
September 20, 2012 around 3pm I was sitting in the floor playing with Paxton and his daddy doll. My step dad walked in the door and I could see some men behind him but my mind didn’t process them. Dan says “Chelsey there are some men here to see you”. I hobble up out of the floor, I am 6 1/2 months pregnant after all, and stand before them. “Are you Mrs Swindle” with hesitation I answer yes. “On 9-20-12…..” my heart stopped! The world just drifted away. I couldn’t process what I was being told. How is this even possible? We know this is something we have to prepare for but you never really think it is going to happen to your family. When the plane landed at the Air Force base, I hoped and prayed he was going to walk off that plane. He didn’t. I was escorted by two military men to welcome his flag draped casket home. My legs were like Jello and they had to help me every step of the way, surrounded by family and a patriot gaurd flag line.
These are the memories I have to share with my boys on days like today. Before I lost Jason , I admit I was one who mixed up the holidays but I hope that I can help and teach others what today is really about. Remembering our hero’s who gave their lives while fighting for their families and our country. I would give anything to have Jason home with us but today I will be celebrating him and honoring his memories.
