American Idol says Carrie Underwood will join the judges’ panel for its 23rd season, sitting alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. Underwood, a standout success story from the show, will replace Katy Perry, who served as a judge for seven years. Perry announced her departure in February while promoting the 22nd season, explaining on Jimmy Kimmel Live that she needed to “go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.” She mentioned she would be focusing on her music career and working on new music.

After Perry’s final episode aired, speculation about her replacement began to spread. Judges suggested various names, including Jelly Roll, Meghan Trainor, and Idol alumni like Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia. In early July, Luke Bryan mentioned to Billboard that P!nk, Miley Cyrus, and Meghan Trainor were being considered. Among these, Trainor was the most vocal about her interest, expressing in an interview with Andy Cohen that judging Idol was her “dream job” and she had even contacted industry insiders to express her enthusiasm.

Trainor, who appeared as a contestant mentor and performer on Idol’s 22nd season, was highly praised for her excitement and passion for the show. Despite this, she was not selected for the judging role.

The announcement of Underwood as the new judge was met with widespread approval from fans. American Idol shared the news with a social media post featuring a video montage of her audition from Season Four, 20 years ago. Fans’ reactions were overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their excitement and nostalgia.

Season 23 of American Idol is scheduled to air in the spring of 2025, with auditions beginning on July 31 through virtual auditions and continuing with open casting calls throughout August and September.
